Some of the Dell laptops do have very low volume. If the volume is closer to normal with the native driver, that means the Realtek driver is choking it. That's not surprising all old Toshiba dn't usually have a great sound in fact i'm using an old toshiba right now... there's only one thing you can really do is buy some portable 4.0 speakers...
